Oklahoma Softball Tops Mississippi State At Mary Nutter Classic
The Oklahoma Sooners defeated Mississippi State 9-3 at the 2024 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic to extend their record winning streak to 63 games.
What started out as a blow-for-blow battle between two college softball heavyweights Friday quickly turned into a familiar Oklahoma rout, as the Sooners defeated Mississippi State 9-3 to pick up their 63rd consecutive win and first victory at the 2024 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, California.
Mississippi State opened the scoring at Big League Dreams Cathedral City’s Wrigley Field with a two-run home run from junior Jessie Blaine in the top of the first inning, but Oklahoma answered with a two-run blast of its own from graduate student Kinzie Hansen.
The Bulldogs added one more run in the top of the second inning and then went silent, while the Sooners continued to pile on the runs, scoring at least one in the first five innings.

The Sooner offense racked up 12 hits, with four players each getting two, and still managed to leave seven runners on base, despite plating nine runs.
None of the Mississippi State batters had more than one hit in the game, and the Bulldogs stranded nine runners of their own.
In the circle, Oklahoma went with a pitching-by-committee approach against the Bulldogs, giving three pitchers – Nicole May, SJ Geurin and Kelly Maxwell – the chance to get some reps.
May went four innings, giving up seven hits and three runs, while striking out four and walking three. She earned the win and improved to 4-0 on the season.
Mississippi State used four pitchers in the loss, with starting Aspen Wesley taking the loss to fall to 4-1 in 2024. She went three innings, giving up seven hits and five runs, while striking out four.
Friday’s meeting between Mississippi State and Oklahoma was the eighth time in history the two teams have faced each other. Oklahoma leads the series 8-0, including a pair of wins in March 2023.
With the win, the Sooners are 10-0 on the season, and their record winning streak now extends more than a calendar year.
Their last loss came against Baylor on Feb. 19, 2023. It was followed by a 53-game winning run that ended with Oklahoma’s third consecutive national title.
The next obstacle in Oklahoma’s quest to become the first team in history to win four straight national championships will be Wisconsin (Friday at 11 p.m. EST), also on BLD’s Wrigley Field.
Before being the Sooners’ latest casualty, Mississippi State wasted no time getting acclimated to the time change from Mississippi to California, and the Bulldogs were able to notch two victories at the 2024 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Thursday.
MSU helped kick off the first day of competition at Big League Dreams Cathedral City by beating the University of Central Florida and Notre Dame by scores of 2-1 and 7-4 respectively.
The Bulldogs now are 10-2 on the season, with their other loss coming against UC Davis at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Mexico on Feb. 18.
On paper, in the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll, Mississippi State landed in the No. 25 spot, after not being ranked in the previous edition, and Oklahoma continues to be the unanimous No. 1 team in the country.
They are just two of the 30 teams that have converged on Cathedral City to compete in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic from Feb. 22-25.
After its nightcap against Wisconsin on Friday, Oklahoma will take a meeting with San Diego State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern. The Sooners will wrap up their 2024 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a doubleheader Sunday, facing Seattle at noon Eastern and Loyola Marymount at 2:30 p.m. EST.
Mississippi State also will play five games in California. The Bulldogs’ event will conclude with a pair of games Saturday – Cal State Fullerton (5:30 p.m. Eastern) and Fresno State (10:30 p.m. EST).
