Villanova Softball Looks To Stay Unbeaten Vs. Conference, Creighton

Villanova softball takes its perfect BIG EAST mark into a road challenge to open April, facing a Creighton softball team looking to make a splash after a BIG EAST sweep to close March.

The Wildcats return to BIG EAST competition after facing a stiff non-conference last week, drawing a top-15-ranked Missouri team between a pair of contests with the Atlantic Coast Conference's Virginia Cavaliers.

In its return to the league, Villanova brings a top-notch pitching staff with a season ERA of 3.52, and a conference ERA of 1.90. Creighton has had the BIG EAST's best team batting average in conference competition at .329.

Alyssa Seidler sports a 2.95 ERA with 59 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .218 through her 16 appearances and 12 starts for the Wildcats. Caroline Pellicano, who has made a team-high 18 appearances for Villanova, has a 2.49 ERA with 29 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.30.

Creighton's Cayla Nielsen, Madeline Vejvoda and Lily West pace the Creighton batting order, each with averages better than .300.

The styles clash will shape what could be a pivotal matchup for the BIG EAST regular-season championship race.

Villanova will begin their series with Creighton on April 5 at 4:00pm ET.

Players to Watch

Ava Franz, Infielder

Middle infielder Ava Franz is one of five Wildcats with batting averages north of .300, but has come on particularly strong of late. She went 5-of-10 over the Wildcats' three games against Virginia and Missouri, and has knocks in five of the last six.

Franz drove in three runs on March 17 against BIG EAST foe Providence and followed up with four RBI against Philadelphia-area rival Saint Joseph's. Her 24 runs batted in lead Villanova.

Sydney Potter, Catcher/Infielder

Freshman Sydney Potter has made a splash for Creighton at the plate. Through the first two months, she has a team-high eight home runs and 27 RBI, and her .627 slugging percentage is .131 higher than the next-leading Bluejay batter.

Potter carries a four-game hitting streak, with RBI in each of them, into the Villanova series. She homered twice in the sweep of BIG EAST opponent Georgetown.
