NATIONAL RANKINGS
By Mark Tennis – Editor, CalHiSports.com
Final FAB 50 national rankings for the 2015 high school season are not yet done due to state championships still coming up in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Connecticut and some other states, but the No. 1 ranking as of this week won’t change.

The question became whether the team that knocked off season-long leader Mission Viejo (Calif.) was going to move up to No. 1 itself or did another team have a strong enough resume and a strong enough schedule to warrant being elevated to that position.
Yucaipa was the team that handed previous No. 1 Mission Viejo its first and only loss with a 1-0 win in last Friday’s CIF Southern Section Division II championship. And after analyzing the teams toward the top of last week’s rankings, the previous No. 4 Thunderbirds do indeed have a strong enough resume to end No. 1 and will officially be crowned mythical national champions once the final rankings are announced.
Although Yucaipa ended with three losses, two of those were to Mission Viejo in one-run games at two of the nation’s top tournaments – the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz., and the Michelle Carew Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Those also were the only two games Yucaipa lost in both of those events.

Both previous No. 3 Forest of Ocala, Fla., and No. 6 Bishop Carroll of Wichita, Kan., were also checked out to perhaps finish on top.
Forest had the best record among any of the state champions in powerful Florida, but the Class 6A state champs did have a loss to Class 7A runner-up Hagerty so there was not an overwhelming consensus in Florida whether the Bobcats should be the No. 1 team in the state.
Bishop Carroll obliterated every team on its schedule, including a 10-0 romp past Blue Valley West in the Class 5A state final. The Golden Eagles, however, didn’t play anyone from outside of Kansas and didn’t even play Class 6A state champ Olathe South.
With all that Mission Viejo accomplished in all of its games (except one loss to a team it beat twice earlier) it simply makes the most sense to only drop the Diablos from No. 1 to No. 2 this week and reward the team they lost to with a move to the top.
