NATIONAL RANKINGS

While some California section playoffs have yet to begin, the state playoffs have gone into upset mode in Texas.
Last week’s No. 4 team in the FAB 50, Rockwall of Texas, dropped two straight games to Midway of Waco to see its hopes for being an unbeaten Class 5A state champion go up in smoke. Morgan Ling shut down Rockwall on four hits in a 3-0 win after the Pantherettes won 8-0 to start the series.
Midway upped its record to 26-3 after the sweep and went in at No. 20 in this week’s rankings with Rockwall falling to No. 25.
Another team on the rise in Texas is new No. 21 Keller. That team’s two-game sweep was against previous No. 22 Flower Mound. Up next for Keller as well is new No. 4 Coronado of Lubbock.
Coronado reached the Class 5A state semifinals last season and hasn’t lost yet this season, which is more than enough reasons for such a high ranking despite strength of schedule concerns.

Another major softball state (joining Florida) to conclude its season is Arizona, which had its Division I and Division II state finals on Monday night.
FAB 50 No. 14 Mountain Ridge of Glendale couldn’t get it done in Division I and fell to O’Connor of Phoenix 2-0. It marked the first state title for Sandra Day O’Connor, which was led by the pitching of sophomore Emma Vesely. Mountain Ridge standout Alyssa DiCarlo was walked intentionally four times on 16 straight pitches, but others couldn’t deliver in RBI situations.
In the Arizona D2 final, Cienega of Vail captured its second state title with a 9-2 win over Salpointe Catholic of Tucson. Wisconsin-bound catcher Melanie Cross broke the game open for Cienega in the fourth inning by ripping a bases-clearing double with the bases loaded.
Both O’Connor and Cienega were teams that lost to California squads that are not currently in the California state rankings at the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions early in the season. When people wonder why so many teams from California are in the FAB 50, that’s an indication.
