NATIONAL RANKINGS

One of the most influential softball states for the FAB 50 national rankings each season is now done for the season and last Saturday’s state finals in Florida at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach were eventful to say the least.

Last week’s No. 5 team in the FAB 50 and a team we’ve been ranking high all season, American Heritage of Plantation, was stunned in the Class 5A championship, 1-0, by Baker County. The 0-0 pitcher’s duel was broken in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Brandie Callaway, which gave Baker County ace Macy Jackson all she needed to complete a three-hit shutout.
American Heritage couldn’t be punished too harshly for losing the one game and dropped to No. 25 in this week’s rankings. Baker County, at the same time, had to be rewarded for the win and went in as this week’s highest newcomer at No. 24.
With both American Heritage and Hagerty of Oviedo (which was No. 8 last week) not winning state titles, the team in Florida with the highest ranking that did get it done last weekend was previous No. 11 Forest of Ocala.
In a wild and crazy Class 7A championship, Forest held off Tampa Chamberlain 8-7. Chamberlain had runners at second and third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but instead of tying the score or winning, it was catcher Caley Chappel of Forest who saved the day by throwing out two runners, including one runner at third that ended the game. How many times in softball are throwing errors at the end that lead to titles? In this case, the throws were right on the money.

Hagerty’s loss came to Newsome of Lithia in the Class 8A semifinals, 1-0, in eight innings. Newsome then won the title 5-4 over Coral Reef of Miami behind winning pitcher Cassidy Davis, who also hit a two-run homer.
Finishing as Florida’s No. 2 overall team in the FAB 50, meanwhile, will be Class 7A state champion Tate of Cantonment. Tate dominated Sarasota in its title game 8-1 behind winning pitcher Tori Perkins, who also went 3-for-4 and drove in six runs. Tate, which lost in the state semifinals last year, was moved from No. 20 to No. 15 in this week’s FAB 50.
