Marty Tyson's Corona Angels kicked their summer off with some perfection.
UCLA-committed right-hander Megan Faraimo and Oregon State-committed right-hander Mariah Mazon combined on a perfect game and Noelle Hee belted a solo homer in the Corona Angels' 1-0 victory over Firecrackers-AZ on Day 1 of Triple Crown Sports' Zoom Into June Invitational on Friday at Diamond Valley Park in Hemet, Calif.
Faraimo struck out seven in her three innings of flawless work.
"The whole team was excited to be together again," Faraimo said. "All of us came back from high school, so we had good chemistry again. I think me and Mariah have good chemistry in the circle too. Yeah, it was pretty fun. It was just fun pitching for the both of us. Mariah did a good job in her three innings and shut it down.
"This weekend in particular I just want to see where I am coming back to travel ball. I'm just trying to give my best for my team, obviously, and I want to see really where I am."
Mazon, who went 22-3 with a 0.60 ERA and 242 strikeouts in 164.1 innings to lead Tulare Mission Oak to a CIF Central Section Division 4 championship during the high school season, struck out five in her three perfect innings to close the door on Firecrackers-AZ, who got a solid pitching performance from Arizona State-commit Jessica Lynch.
"It felt a little weird at first," Mazon said of her first outing back with the Corona Angels. "It's softball, so you get used to it. I was just trying to hit my spots and stay ahead in the count. It felt weird because we haven't played together in a really long time because we were at high school and stuff."
Hee's solo blast to left-center field in the bottom of the fifth was all Faraimo and Mazon needed.
"I think our goals as a team would be to hit hard line drives and get rallies going, string some hits together and get something going," said Hee, a Washington-committed 1B/C. ...
Tournament director Krista Crawford, who also coaches the TC Stars, said Zoom Into June is in its fifth year and this year's event has attracted 432 teams from 10U-18U that are playing a 15 facilities throughout Southern California. She added that over 350 college coaches will be out scouting for talent this weekend.
"We had organization workouts yesterday from 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.," Crawford said. "We had amazing feedback from the college coaches and the club coaches. The college coaches were able to see all the uncommitted kids like from the So Cal Athletics and the San Jose Sting all in one place. They absolutely loved it. Today we had the OnDeck (Softball) camp and games went off without a hitch. Everything has been going really smooth." ...
