MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — Dawn Bodrug produced a perfect ending to a highly successful season-opening trip.

And the last pitcher to accomplish the feat for the Stony Brook softball team was on hand to watch it.

Bodrug tossed a perfect game for the Seawolves in a 7-0 victory against Cornell on Sunday.

The last perfect game was tossed by Allison Cukrov against Manhattan on April 5, 2012. She is currently the pitching coach for Cornell.

Bodrug struck out the first eight batters she faced en route to becoming the fourth pitcher in the program's Division I era to toss a perfect game. She is the lone pitcher from that select group to do so in a full seven-inning game.

"I just had to focus on one batter at a time and not getting ahead of myself," Bodrug said. "I trusted my defense and worked with [catcher] Corinne Badger every single pitch to get one out at a time."

Bodrug, a junior-college transfer and Georgetown, Ontario, native, struck out 15 batters in total.

"Dawn's performance today was exceptional and her team was behind her offensively and defensively," coach Megan Bryant said. "A perfect game is special but it is a team effort."

Coupled with a 2-1 win against Georgetown earlier Sunday, Stony Brook completed its season-opening trip to the Sunshine State with a 5-0 record.

That's the program's best start in nearly three decades.

The Seawolves last started 5-0 during the 1991 season. Only a 10-0 start by the 1982 edition is longer.

In Game 1 on Sunday against Georgetown, the Seawolves again flashed their late comeback ability as Jordyn Nowakowski delivered a go-ahead two-run double in the bottom of the sixth.

"Our team has put in a lot of work to get prepared for the season and it's nice to see that work pay off," Bryant said. "We had a great approach this weekend individually and collectively. It's a good start and it's exciting to take the next step."
