Jenna Johnson will do just about anything to help her team win, even if it means putting herself at great physical risk. Her parents and coaches hold their breath every time she slides headfirst into a base on a steal or attempting to beat out a grounder. Even temporary fencing is no match for the 5-foot-7 right-handed-hitting outfielder. Many batters have gone back to the dugout in utter disbelief after Johnson vaulted over the fence to rob them of a home run.

By the early 1990s, Triple Crown’s ability to connect with thousands of slow-pitch softball athletes began to reverberate in another sport, that of youth fast-pitch. The Fireworks tournament had begun in Arvada back in the early 1970s but by then had moved to Boulder. The steady success of the fast-pitch series plan led to a critical development in 2002, with the advent of the Sparkler.
Every once in a while, DeMarini Aces 16U coach Ryan Taylor has to pinch himself to make sure he isn’t dreaming. It’s a rare luxury to have a pair of identical twins on the same team who both possess top-level talent. Since forming the Aces in 2010, Taylor has coached three sets of identical twins, with the first two going on to Division I schools.

Tatum Sparks acquired her love of softball from watching older brother Tanner excel as a baseball player. Tanner, a standout two-way player at Shawnee (Oklahoma) High School, captured All-State Player of the Year honors and led the Wolves to a perfect season and their third consecutive state title in 2016. He just completed his redshirt freshman season as a pitcher for Oklahoma State.
Pitching a perfect game is quite an accomplishment at any level. Throwing a perfect game while striking out all 21 batters faced is almost unheard of.

Dana Sorensen graduated from Stanford as a three-time All-American, four-time All Pac 10 player who led the Cardinals to two Women’s College World Series. She pursued a Master’s Degree in Exercise Sport Science at the University of North Carolina. During that time was named to the USA National Team and was a member of the Gold medal team. Sorensen spent several years coaching at the collegiate level at UC Davis and Oregon State. She is certified in Strength & Conditioning, Kettlebell, Functional Movement Screen, and Functional Movement Systems. Sorensen and Jono Green have teamed up to open Symbiotic Training to amatuer and professional athletes.

Aaliyah Ortiz is better known as “Papi” or “Big Papi,” by her teammates and coaches. The nickname fits, not just because she shares the same last name as the Boston Red Sox star, but because of how her offensive impact on the softball field resembles that of David “Big Papi” Ortiz.
